Background Through a unique combination of experiences, I have cultivated a singular expertise and original perspective on science communication. As a dietitian, I worked clinically with physicians to create evidence-based patient care plans; as a scientist, I collaborated with surgeons and scientists on research projects; and as a community advocate, I improve the local environment for health and science. Now, I use those experiences to help early-stage biotechs identify and communicate their value proposition to investors (private or government) and the public. While working in the hospital, I observed the inconsistent effects of nutritional interventions among diverse patient populations. I began to investigate the research behind nutritional interventions but was disappointed at the lack of information, which ultimately motivated me to begin working as a technician in a metabolism-oriented lab. Immediately, I felt at home in the research environment and completed my master's thesis in that lab. I earned my PhD in a glycobiology lab, where I worked closely with biotechs and regularly participated in citywide initiatives that strengthened the presence and improved the success of local bio-based startups. In addition, I worked within the community to improve healthcare access and health education for children and to promote the success of women in STEM careers.
The Written Science, LLC During my transition from the clinic to the lab, I realized that the integration of scientific discoveries into clinical practice is inefficient and slow. This must change. Clinicians need easy access to the latest biomedical discoveries and the most novel, validated technology to make the best decisions for patients and to improve healthcare overall. I founded The Written Science to expedite the translation of research into medicine.
Communication is one of the main barriers to the clinical adoption of biotechnology. Clearly conveying the clinical significance of basic research requires time - a scarce commodity that neither clinicians nor researchers have to spare. I dedicate my time to bridging this gap so that scientists can focus on their research, propelling scientific progress forward, and so that physicians can continue to care for patients, providing life-saving treatment and medical insights. Using my combined clinical and research experience, I create content that facilitates the flow of information between the bench and the bedside and improves the clinical acceptance of novel biotechnology. Biotech business and research teams trust me to clearly communicate the medical significance of their scientific breakthroughs: together, we translate science into medicine.
